of likely voters shows the race between president obama and governor romney remaining up for grabs. the president leads 50% to 47%. but his three-point margin is within the poll's sampling error. our chief national correspondent john king is in denver getting ready for the debate over there. that's the site of the debate. john, take us into these numbers. what are you seeing? >> reporter: well, wolf, i can tell you this, talking to senior officials in the romney campaign, they believe after a tough week or ten days, the last several days, they have a little bit of a breeze at their back. they say the race has stabilized. you dig into the numbers. what is the most important issue in this first debate? the economy. look at this poll. which candidate would better handle the economy? the president, 49%, governor romney, 48%. a dead heat. the president has to defend his record. governor romney not only needs to attack his record but to convince voters he has a better place to take them if he wins the election. and you know this full well, the reason this debate and what both candidates
morning. well, look, as you just played out in those sound bites, it was a big night for governor romney. some have suggested it was a make or break debate for him. he certainly showed up to fight. and voters agree he got the win in a cnn or flash poll, 67% of the voters said he won the debate. 25% saying president obama won. how did he do it? he challenged the president, never backed down even as the president appeared not to want to push back until the second half of the debate. take a listen. >> i just don't know how the president could have come into office, facing 23 million people out of work, rising unemployment, an economic crisis at the kitchen table and spend his energy and passion for two years for fighting for obamacare instead of fighting for jobs for the american people. it has killed jobs. >> for 18 months, he has been running on this tax plan. and now, five weeks before the election, he is saying his big, bold idea is never mind. >> reporter: now, carol, remember, there are two more preside presidential debates. next week we also have the vice presidential debate. it will

to persuade people that governor romney is the guy they should vote for. at the national level, that means they need to fix whatever has gone so wrong with their campaign message and they need to stop doing whatever it is that has turned so many people off to their candidate. when you ask voters whether they like this mitt romney guy, the answer is a very, very plain answer. no. his favorable ratings are in the low 40s. almost 10 points lower than the ratings for president obama. lower, even, than the famously unpopular former president george w. bush right now. swing state voters say they do not think that mitt romney cares about the needs and problems of people like them. some of mr. romney's numbers are just shockingly bad. i mean double check. shockingly bad. look at the percentage of swing state voters who say mitt romney's policies will favor the middle class. in florida it's 8%. in ohio it's 9%. in pennsylvania it's 9%. whatever the romney campaign has done to get themselves to this point, whether it's mr. romney's tax returns, or the lack thereof, or getting rich by laying off fact
